General Author GuidelinesAims and Scope
The Journal of Advanced Nursing
(JAN) is an international, peer reviewed, scientific
journal. JAN contributes to the advancement of
evidence-based nursing, midwifery and healthcare by disseminating
high quality research and scholarship of contemporary relevance and
with potential to advance knowledge for practice, education,
management or policy.
The Editors welcome scholarly papers that contribute to the
development and understanding of all aspects of advanced nursing
and midwifery care. Manuscripts of up to 5000 words (for the main
text, excluding the abstract, summary statement, tables and
references) on nursing and midwifery practice, education,
management, and research with a sound scientific, theoretical or
philosophical base, are encouraged.
Papers will be accepted in two parts where the content in each
paper addresses a different aspect of the research undertaken. Each
part must stand alone and should reference but not replicate the
other in any way. The submission of shorter papers (maximum of 2500
words of text and a maximum of 12 references) is actively
encouraged. This option should be used for reporting research that
is small in scale or exploratory and/or with findings that are
inclusive or without potential for replication or
generalization.
All manuscripts are double-blind reviewed and, where
appropriate, medical statisticians review those with statistical
content. Letters and commentaries up to 1000 words in response to
papers published in the Journal are welcomed in the JANForum
section and should be sent to the Editor in Chief. These responses
should be submitted within 2 months of the original material's
publication.
Papers should be submitted exclusively to the Journal of
Advanced Nursing. If accepted, authors are required to
complete a Copyright Transfer Agreement form which grants
the Journal the exclusive right to publish their paper. For full
copyright details please see below.
The Editors will decide on the time of publication. The
Editors retain the right to modify the style of a contribution;
major changes will be agreed with the author(s).
Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted online at https://Mc.manuscriptcentral.com/Jan.
Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user
ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be
contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167) Monday-Friday, or at
http://mcv3support.custhelp.com.
If you cannot submit online, please contact the Editorial Office by

Manuscript style
For detailed instructions about the style and content of
papers, please see our author guidelines at www.journalofadvancednursing.com.
Two-part Papers
Where two papers are produced from the same study, they should be
submitted to JAN as freestanding papers and not as a
two-part paper. There should be minimal duplication and no 'cut and
paste' of material between the two papers. However, it might be
appropriate to describe the research methods fully in the first
paper and give a summary of these in the second paper, with
reference to the fuller description in the first paper. However
this is done, there must always be direct referencing to any
previous paper/s that has/have been published (or is 'in press')
from the same study and the rules that apply to plagiarism are
equally applicable to one's own work.
Authors should also be aware of the danger of trying to publish
small sections of study in several separate papers, simply with the
objective of collecting publications rather than with addressing
in-depth different aspects of the same study, or reporting that
study in different ways for very different readerships. This
'salami slicing' can lead to misrepresentation: for example, by
decontextualising the findings or losing the benefits of using
triangulation in the research being reported.
Copyright
Copyright Transfer
Agreement
Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement
(CTA) for all papers, including abstracts, accepted for
publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and
papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a
signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the
Copyright Transfer Agreement does not affect ownership of copyright
in the material. (Government employees need to complete the
Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not
need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain
the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances
(please see the form for further details). To assist authors
an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office.
Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form
from: www.wiley.com/go/ctaaglobal.
All manuscripts are considered on the understanding that they have
not been published previously in print or electronic format nor are
they under consideration by another publication or medium. If the
paper is part of a larger study and you, or other authors, have
written additional papers that have been published/submitted for
publication in this or any other journal using the study as the
basis for the article, you must contact the Executive Editor with
details to ensure that there is no breach of copyright. Any breach
of copyright will be taken very seriously and appropriate action
taken.
Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to
reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Early View (Publication Prior to Print)
This journal is covered
by Wiley-Blackwell's Early View service. Early View
articles are complete full-text articles published online in
advance of their publication in a printed issue. Early View
articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed,
revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final
corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form,
no changes can be made after online publication. Early View
articles are given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows
the article to be cited and tracked before allocation to an issue.
After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to
be used to cite and access the article.
Online Open
Online Open is a pay-to-publish service from
Wiley-Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for
publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to
become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via
the Wiley Interscience website. Each Online
Open article will be subject to a one-off fee of $3,000
to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication.
Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF
versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of
charge. The print version of the article will also be
branded 'Online Open' and will draw attention to the fact
that the paper can be downloaded for free via the Wiley
Interscience service.
References
• References within the text should cite the authors’ names
followed by the date of publication, in chronological date order,
e.g. (Lewis 1975, Barnett 1992, Chalmers 1994). Where there
are more than two authors, the first author’s name
followed by et al. will suffice, e.g. (Barder et al. 1994), but all
authors should be cited in the reference list. Page numbers should
be given in the text for all quotations, e.g. (Chalmers 1994, p.
7). All references should be cited from primary sources.
• References follow the Harvard style, i.e. they are listed in
alphabetical order of first authors’ names.
• When a paper is cited, the reference list should include
authors’ surnames and initials, date of publication, title of
paper, name of journal in full, volume number (and issue number
where volume pages do not run on), and first and last page
numbers.
• When a book is cited, the title should be stated, followed
by the publisher and town, county/state (and country if necessary)
of publication, and first and last page numbers.
• Where a chapter in an edited book is cited, details of
author and editors should be given as well as publisher, place of
publication, and first and last page numbers. The edition (where
appropriate) of all books should be identified.
• References stated as being ‘in press’ only acceptable if
accompanied by proof of acceptance.
• We encourage you to refer to existing literature published
in JAN.
Figures and tables
Always include a citation in the text for each figure and table.
Artwork should be submitted online in electronic form. Detailed
information on our digital illustration standards is available from
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/journal.asp
Any abbreviations used in figures and tables should be defined in
an footnote.
Approval for reproduction/modification of any material (including
figures and tables) published elsewhere should be obtained by the
authors/copyright holders before submission of the manuscript.
Contributors are responsible for any copyright fee involved.
Page proofs
The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing
a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be
provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded
as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat
Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software
can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and
printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further
instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be
posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by
the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be
charged separately.
Online production tracking is now available for your
article through Wiley-Blackwell’s Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it
has been accepted - through the production process to publication
online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles
online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of
production so they do not need to contact the production editor to
check on progress. Visit Author Services for
more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of
resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation,
submission and more.
Offprints
Upon publication, authors will be provided with electronic
offprints in the form of a PDF file. Electronic offprints are sent
to the corresponding author at his/her e-mail address on the title
page of the paper, unless advised otherwise. Additional paper
offprints may be ordered online. Please click on the following link
