The Submission Process

Setting up an account

The Journal of Advanced Nursing uses a web-based submission and peer review system called ScholarOne Manuscripts. All papers should be submitted at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jan. This system is quick and convenient for both authors and reviewers. It also reduces the time it takes to make a decision on a paper by reducing postal and processing delays throughout the editorial process.

Log-in or click the “Create Account” option if you are a first-time user. If you are creating a new account:

  1. After clicking on “Create Account”, enter your name and e-mail information and click “Next”. Your e-mail information is very important.
  2. Enter your institution and address information as appropriate, and then click “Next.”
  3. Enter a user ID and password of your choice (we recommend using your e-mail address as your user ID), and then select your area of expertise.
  4. Click “Finish”.

If you have an account, but have forgotten your log-in details, go to Password Help on the journal’s online submission system and enter your e-mail address. The system will send you an automatic user ID and a new temporary password.

Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Full support for authors is provided. Each page has a 'Get Help Now' icon on the site connecting directly to the online support system. Queries can also be emailed to support@scholarone.com and telephone support is available through the US Scholar One support office between 8:00 and 22:30 GMT on +1 434-817-2040 ext 167. If you cannot submit online, please contact the JAN Editorial Office by telephone (+44 (0)1865 476518) or by e-mail (jan@wiley.com)

The electronic submission process

Log-in to your author centre. Once you have logged-in, click the “Submit a Manuscript” link in the menu bar.

Enter data and answer questions as appropriate. You may copy and paste directly from your paper. Please note that abstracts need to be included in the main word file as well as in the free form box in ScholarOne Manuscripts.

Click the "Next" button on each screen to save your work and advance to the next screen.

Upload of files:

  1. Click on the “Browse” button and locate the file on your computer.
  2. Select the appropriate designation of each file in the drop-down menu next to the Browse button.
  3. When you have selected all files you wish to upload, click the “Upload Files” button.

Review your submission before sending to the Journal. Click the “Submit” button when you are finished reviewing.

Please note that we are unable to accept any papers uploaded in PDF or Word 2007 (.docx) format.

You can check ScholarOne Manuscripts at any time to see the status of your paper. The Journal’s Editorial Office will inform you by e-mail once a decision has been made.

Once your paper has been submitted, a ‘checklist’ will then be completed by the Editorial Assistant. The Editorial Assistant will check to see that the paper has all required components and adheres to the author guidelines. Once the Editorial Assistant is satisfied with the paper it will be forwarded to the Senior Editor who will assign an editor and reviewers.

The review process

All papers submitted to JAN are subject to an initial review by the Senior Editor, to check that the paper fits with JAN’s stated aims and scope and complies with essential requirements. If so, the paper will be sent to be peer reviewed. If not, your paper will be rejected or, in some cases, the opportunity will be given for resubmission after corrections.

Papers sent on to peer review will be assigned to one of JAN’s Editors with expertise in the relevant field. Papers are double-blind peer reviewed, from a database of 800 reviewers, located around the globe and referenced by their expert knowledge. The paper will be sent to a statistical reviewer if necessary.

The review process typically takes 6-8 weeks, but can take up to 10 weeks depending on reviewer availability. We ask that authors refrain from contacting the Editorial Office to enquire about the status of their papers within this time.

Once papers have been reviewed, the reviewers’ comments are sent to the Editor, who will then make a preliminary decision on the paper. At this stage, based on the feedback from reviewers, manuscripts can be accepted, rejected, or revisions can be recommended.

Most papers need to be returned to authors for them to attend to specific issues raised by the reviewers. This is standard practice in order to ensure the quality of material published in JAN. If revisions are recommended, authors are notified by email, and will be sent as much feedback as possible from reviewers and the Editor. Authors will then be asked to submit a revised paper within 3 months of the decision, but we do encourage authors to revise and return their paper without unnecessary delay.

Papers which have extensive revisions recommended will be sent out for further review (usually by the same reviewer(s)) on their resubmission.

When a paper is finally accepted, the Technical Editor undertakes a final edit and a marked-up copy will be emailed to you to make any final adjustments.

Submission of revised papers

When you are revising your paper, taking on board the reviewers’ and Editor’s feedback, please highlight all changed text in red font. Please do not use track changes as they can make papers difficult to follow.

To submit revised papers please log into your author centre in ScholarOne Manuscripts. Your paper will be stored under ‘manuscripts with decisions’. Please click on the ‘create a revision’ link, located to the right of the paper title. A revised paper number will be created for you. You will then need to click on the ‘continue submission’ option.

You will be taken to a submission process very similar to that for new papers. You will be able to amend any details you wish. At stage 6 (‘File upload’) please delete the file for your original paper, and upload your revised paper.

Please upload an anonymous cover letter, preferably in table format, which includes a point by point response to the feedback given in the decision email, alongside your revised paper word file.

You will then need to review your paper as a PDF, and click ‘submit’. Your paper will have the same ID number as your original paper, with an ‘R’ and a number on the end – for example, JAN-2009-0123 for an original paper, JAN-2009-0123.R1 for a ‘revision one’, and so on.

Please do not submit your revised paper as a new paper, as revised manuscripts are processed differently. If, when you click on ‘create a revision’, a message is shown saying that the revision option has expired, please contact the Editorial Assistant on jan@wiley.com to get it reactivated.
