Launching the new National Stroke Strategy

In the UK, 150,000 people have a stroke each year. High mortality and morbidity result from poor care, with the UK being the worst in Europe. The National Stroke Strategy, will specify improvements in stroke care. Whilst preventing stroke is key, raising public awareness of stroke symptoms, ensuring emergency ambulances, specialist treatment, and ongoing rehabilitation and support are crucial. Staff must be truly stroke specialist, and systems for delivery of this expertise must be developed. Collaborative working with key personnel will be fundamental, with nurses providing leadership for, and delivery of, evidence-based stroke services. These are exciting times; stroke care will finally achieve deserved recognition. JAN is publishing two stroke related papers which are free to access on Blackwell Synergy.
